What is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth Extraction, also it is called pulling a tooth, is needed when your tooth is damaged or badly infected.

What are the Types of Tooth Extraction?

There are two types of this treatment. First one is simple tooth extraction and the second one is surgical tooth extraction. Tooth extraction is performed by your dentist and it is a relatively quick outpatient procedure with either local, general, intravenous anesthesia or a combination.

What is Tooth Extraction Procedure

The process begins with a local anesthetic injection around the area of the tooth that is to be extracted. After that we will use a an instrument known as an elevator to loosen the tooth. Then your tooth will be removed. And finally we will place a piece of gauze into the empty socket to prevent bleeding.

You will get also intravenous anesthesia for the surgical tooth extraction process. It makes you unconscious during the procedure.

Especially, you receive local anesthesia to numb your gums. It depends on the extraction procedure.

Tooth Extraction Recovery Process

After a tooth extraction, proper aftercare is vital, as it helps promote clotting and protect the extraction site during the healing process. Most simple extractions should heal within 7 to 10 days.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

You can feel discomfort and you may have pain. To speed up the healing process, please follow these items.

Get plenty of rest: Relax for at least 24 hours after the extraction. Limit activity for the next day or two.

Leave the gauze pad as necessary: You should change the gauze pad until about three to four hours.

Avoid rinsing: As tempting as it can be in first 24 hours, avoid rinsing, swishing, or gargling anything in the mouth while the area is still clotting. After 24 hours, rinse with your mouth with a solution made of 1/2 teaspoon salt and 8 ounces of warm water.

Do not use straws: Using a straw places a lot of pressure on the healing wound, which can easily dislodge the blood clot.

Do not spit: Spitting also creates pressure in the mouth.

Avoid blowing the nose or sneezing: If the surgeon removed a tooth from the upper half of the mouth, blowing the nose or sneezing can create pressure in the head that may dislodge the developing blood clot.

Do not smoke

Take pain relievers and medications that the dentist recommends: Using your medications is important to complete the full course of treatment. And also take your painkillers as prescribed.

Use cold compresses: Placing an ice pack or a towel-wrapped bag of ice on the area for last 10 minutes at a time may help dull pain.

Elevate the head: When sleeping, use extra pillows to elevate the head.

Eat soft foods: You can eat soup, pudding, applesauce, and yogurt.

When You Should Call Your Dentist?

It is normal to feel some pain after the tooth extraction.In first 24 hours you should also expect some swelling and residual bleeding. However, if either bleeding or pain is still severe more than four hours after your tooth is pulled, you should call your dentist. You should also call your dentist if you experience any of the following:

• Signs of infection, including fever and chills,
• Nausea, redness, swelling,
• Excessive discharge from the affected area,
• Cough,
• Shortness of breath, chest pain, severe nausea or vomiting.

How Many Days Needed for the Treatment?

Tooth extraction or surgical tooth extraction can be completed in 1 day.
